| | | Raising Cane: Restoring Cultural Heritage RiverLink was recently awarded $20,500 from the Cherokee Preservation Foundation to protect river cane along the French Broad River in Asheville. Funding was awarded through the Revitalization of Traditional Cherokee Artisan Resources program. River cane (Arundinaria gigantea), an important source of material for Cherokee artisans, is in decline due to habitat loss and competition from non-native invasive plant species. In partnership with the City of Asheville Parks & Recreation and the Cherokee Preservation Foundation, we will remove invasive plants from river cane stands growing along the Wilma Dykeman Greenway, and take steps to raise awareness of its environmental and cultural importance. Keep an eye out for volunteer opportunities this summer! |
| Local Café Pays It Forward for Earth Day On Earth Day last month, Green Sage Café launched a 6-month program to reduce solid waste and help protect the French Broad River β and you can help! Customers are invited to return their glass drink bottles to Green Sage cafes for reuse in their in-house recycling program. For each bottle returned, Green Sage will donate 10 cents to Riverlink. And when customers bring a reusable mug to be filled in one of their cafes, Green Sage will donate another dime. Seemingly small efforts build up fast, so please join us in supporting Green Sageβs move to reduce, reuse, and reinvest in the health of our French Broad waterways! |

| | | Lifting Up the River Lovers As the weather warms up, so does our volunteer program! We want to take a moment to thank all the volunteers who have gotten outside with us to protect the French Broad River by picking up litter, removing invasive species, or planting native plants for our Southside Community Stormwater Project. We couldnβt accomplish our goals without the help of volunteers who donate their time and energy to make a difference in their community. Special thanks to Asheville Community Yoga, IC Imagine Charter School, True Nature Travels, and so many individuals for your help! RiverLink is also grateful for the support of local businesses and grantmakers who share our commitment to the restoration and revitalization of the French Broad River. This month we lift up the following entities for recognition as they helped us advance essential work through contributions in April: |
| - Buncombe County
- Cherokee Preservation Foundation
- Community Foundation of WNC, especially:
- Black Mountain and Swannanoa Valley Endowment Fund
- Pigeon River Fund
|
